detail of Penelope’s Labor
Penelope was the wife of Odysseus- while her husband was off on his Odyssey following the Trojan War, she was surrounded by hungry suitors whom she was required to entertain as a widow, but refused to marry one as she waited for her husband’s return. She promised she would choose one once she finished the proper mourning ritual of weaving a funeral shroud. Every day she would weave, every night she would undo the stitches and start over. It’s a story of patience, grieving, loss, hope, and yearning for the impossible. This piece is meant to reflect on and bring light to the emotional labors women often endure in silence- unheard, unspoken and un acknowledged. In contrast to the ‘Herculean Labors’ that are often attested to and praised, these quiet moments are a testament to inner strength and resilience, relying on invisible threads of blind faith and perseverance.
